TOURISM DEPARTMENT DIMAPUR:

INTRODUCTION:
           Nagaland, a land shrouded in mystery where culture, tradition, and nature blend in
perfect harmony. Known as the “Land of Festivals”, it is home to 18 distinct tribes, each
with its own rich cultural heritage, customs and traditions. The state showcases a cultural
diversity that is both fascinating and deeply rooted in tradition.
           A land of clouds, mountains, and serpentine rivers, valleys strewn with flowers and
colourful people, Nagaland’s Natural beauty in its varied forms is its major asset. Diverse in
landscape and culture, it offers opportunities for a wide range of tourism activities- most of
which remain largely untapped.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
            The Department of Tourism came became a fully fledged Directorate in the year
1981. Since then, tourism has experienced a slow but steady growth.
The Office of the Senior Tourist Officer, Dimapur and Tourist Lodge were established in the
year 1989. The Office is located within Tourist lodge premises. The office is walking
distance from Old NST bus station, railway station and East Police Station.
             The Office of the Senior Tourist Officer, Dimapur was established with the primary
objective of promotion and developing tourism in the district. Dimapur, being the gateway to
Nagaland, holds strategic importance for the growth of tourism in the state.

Tourist Lodge, Dimapur — Development Of 4/5 Star Hotels Under Ppp Mode.
               In a significant development towards enhancing tourism infrastructure in Nagaland,
The Department of Tourism, Government of Nagaland, entered into a 60-year Lease
Agreement with the Hotel Polo Towers Group, headquartered in Shillong, Meghalaya. The
Agreement was formally signed at Hotel Japfu, Kohima, on 13th September 2023.
               This partnership marks an important milestone in the State’s efforts to promote
tourism and attract high-value investments in the hospitality sector. As per the Agreement, a
4/5 Star Hotel with a mall will be developed in Dimapur. The project will be undertaken
under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model and will operate on the Design, Build,
Maintain, Operate, Manage, and Transfer (DBMOMT) framework.
                Under this initiative, the existing Tourist Lodge, Dimapur, will be upgraded into a
premier hospitality facility comprising luxury accommodation units, multiple dining
establishments, entertainment, recreation zones, and retail outlets. The project is expected to
significantly enhance the quality of tourism infrastructure in the State and contribute to
economic growth and employment generation.

Current Status:
               Following the signing of the Lease Agreement, preliminary site assessments, architectural
planning, and project design works have been initiated by the M/s Polo Towers Group in
coordination with the Department of Tourism. Necessary statutory clearances and land use
permissions are being processed to facilitate timely commencement of construction activities.

Way Forward:
                The Department, in collaboration with the Polo Towers, will continue to monitor the progress
of the project to ensure adherence to timelines and standards. Upon completion, these
establishments are expected to serve as landmark hospitality destinations, thereby positioning
Nagaland as a preferred tourism and investment destination in the North Eastern region.

ROLES AND FUNCTION OF THE DISTRICT OFFICE:

 1) To provide information and services to the tourists visiting the state.
Operate tourist information counters (TICs) as a key point of contact for travellers offering
local information, booking services, guidance and recommendations, distribution of
brochures, tourist guide maps and other emergency support and general help.
The department is currently operating two Tourist information counters in Dimapur .

           a) Tourist information centre at Airport (Air): Tourist information counter cum ILP
                facilitation located at the airport arrival terminal to facilitate and disseminate first-hand
                information to the tourist arriving by flight.
           b) Tourist information centre at Sr. Tourist Officer’s Office (Rail & Road): Tourist
                information counter located at Senior Tourist Officer’s Office is to facilitate and
                disseminate first-hand information, grievances and services to the tourist arriving by
                rail and road. It is located a stone throw away from the railway station and Old NST
                bus stand.

2) Monitoring the progress of field projects.

3) Registration of Homestays /Paying guests, Tour and travel Operators and Tour
guides.

4) Organizing Fairs and Mini hornbill tribal festivals in the district.

5) Capacity building and training programs on Tourism awareness, Tour guiding
and Homestay.

6) Co-ordination and liaison with various organizations and departments for
overall tourism developments inputs.
